Navigando con le tartarughe marine. sms di Giacomo.
Oggi sveglia alle 4,00 del mattino per essere in acqua sin dalle prime luci dell'alba ed approfittare del mare calmo. Pausa ad Agia Roumeli dove finiscono le gole di Samaria, paradiso dei Trekkisti.
Navighiamo per diverse miglia costeggiando altissime scogliere. Notevoli e numerose spiaggie raggiungibili solo dal mare, durante la navigazione avvistiamo anche le tartarughe marine.
Nel pomeriggio il solito vento ci blocca nel porto di Paleochora dove ci fermiamo a dormire ospiti dei pescatori locali."

Today wake up at 4.00 am to be on the water from the first light of the day and take advantage of the good sea. Stop at Agia Roumeli at the end of the gorges of Samaria, a paradise for Trekkers.
We paddle for several miles along towering cliffs and numerous beaches reachable only by sea and we see even sea turtles. In the afternoon the wind hangs we in the port of Paleochora where we stop, guests of local fishermen, to spend the night ."

5° giorno 15 giugno 2008 Capo Calogeros- Loutro 13 miglia (24km).

Partenza all'alba.

A causa del vento e delle termiche l'unica soluzione per fare strada è partire all'alba e pagaiare il più possibile prima che si alzi il vento.

Ieri Giacomo e Salvo hanno percorso 13 miglia (24 km) fino a Loutro, una borgata raggiungibile solo dal mare, il tempo è stato buono di mattina fino a Frangocastello, dove si trova una famosa fortezza a pochi metri dal mare, ma verso le 14,00 un vento fortissimo li ha costretti a fermarsi. Stavolta nemmeno al tramonto sono riusciti a ripartire.

5th day Capo Calogeros - Loutro 13 miles (km24)

Starting at sunshine.

Because of wind and heat the only solution to move forward is starting at sunshine and paddling as much as possible before the wind began to blow. Yesterday, Giacomo and Salvo paddled 13 miles (24 km) to Loutro, a village accessible only by sea, the weather was good in the morning until they reached Frangocastello, where a famous fortress stand up few metres from the sea, but around the 14,00 a very strong wind forced them to stop. This time even at sunset they were able to start over.

4° giorno 14 giugno 2008. Agios Pavlos - Capo Calogeros 18 miglia (33km)
Vento forte!......Si va avanti!
Giacomo e Salvo procedono con il periplo di Creta a dispetto del vento e delle termiche che, nella stessa giornata, trasformano il mare da calmo a molto mosso.
Sabato hanno pagaiato per 18 miglia da Agios Pavlos a Capo Calogeros, con sosta a Preveli, dove hanno risalito per un breve tratto il corso di un fiume pieno di palme. Nel pomeriggio sosta forzata Plakias a causa di una forte termica, che solo alle 19,00 si placa consentendo a Salvo e Giacomo di pagaiare quasi al buio ancora per 5 miglia.

4th day Agios Pavlos- Capo Calogeros 18 miles (33km)
Strong Wind!...... They go on!
Giacomo and Salvo are proceeding the periplus of Crete, despite the wind and thermics, able to transform in the same day the sea from calm to rough. On Saturday they paddled for 18 miles (33km) from Agios Pavlos to Cape Calogeros, with a stop at Preveli, where they went back for a short the course of a river full of palm trees. In the afternoon stop forced in Plakias because of a strong heat, which only at 19,00 calms allowed Salvo and Giacomo to paddle again for 5 miles in the dark.

3°giorno 13 giugno 2008. Lendas- Agios Pavlos 29 miglia (54km)

Si procede.

Finalmente il meteo è clemente e da la possibilità ai nostri kayakers di scivolare bene in acqua facendo percorrere loro 29 miglia (km54) piuttosto serenamente.

Oggi Giacomo e Salvatore hanno doppiato Capo Lithino, il punto più meridionale di Europa, facendo sosta a Matala, spiaggia famosa per le sue grotte a strapiombo sul mare.

Third day proceeds. Lendas - Agios Pavlos 29 miles (54km)

Finally the weather is clement and leaves the possibility to our kayakers to slide well in water let them paddling peacefully for 29 miles (km54).

Today Giacomo and Salvatore have turned Cape Lithino, the southern point of Europe, making stops in Matala, beach famous for its caves overlooking the sea.

2° giorno 12 giugno 2008. Tsoutsouros- Lendas 20 miglia (38 km)
L'Isola dei venti
Giacomo e Salvo continuano il periplo di Creta, nonostante il forte vento contro.
Oggi hanno pagaiato per 20 miglia da Tsoutsouros a Lendas dove sono arrivati a tramonto inoltrato. Sapevamo che l'impresa non era facile, ma questo vento supera ogni previsione.

The Island of the winds
Giacomo and Salvatore continue the periplus of Crete, despite the strong wind against. Today they paddled for 20 miles from Tsoutsouros to Lendas where they arrived at sundown forwarded. We knew that the trip was not easy, but this wind exceeds every expectation.

1° giorno 11 giugno 2008. Mirtos- Tsoutsouros 16 miglia

Il Maestrale non da tregua.

Giacomo e Salvo sono stati costretti dal maestrale a modificare il programma ed a cambiare il punto di partenza. Stamattina di buon ora sono partiti da Mirtos a Sud di Creta ed hanno percorso 16 miglia verso ovest fino a Tsoutsouros. Il forte vento li ha costretti a rallentare parecchio, ma per fortuna navigando fino a tarda sera, hanno rispettato l'itinerario programmato.

Le previsioni per domani sono più favorevoli.

First day Mirtos- Tsoutsouros 16 miles

Mistral not spring.

Giacomo e Salvo were forced by the mistral to modify their programs and to change the starting point. Early in the morning they strated paddling from Mirtos- south of Crete and having run 16 miles due west to Tsoutsouros. The strong wind forced them to slow down a lot, but fortunately paddling until late evening, they complied with the planned route.

The forecast for tomorrow are more favourable.

Prigionieri del Maestrale...
Si inizia in salita! Siamo bloccati a Mochlos, sulla costa Nord-Est dell'isola, da un mare impossibile da navigare. Ieri e oggi forza 6 e 7. Il meteo non ci dice nulla di buono anche per le prossime 48 ore. Il tratto previsto e' molto esposto e non offre ridossi.


Abbiamo quindi deciso di spostare il punto di partenza a Ierapetra, sul versante Sud-Est. La costa maggiormente protetta dovrebbe offrirci la possibilita' di navigare in sicurezza.
Abbiamo gia' potuto apprezzare l'ospitalita' dei cretesi grazie a Anastasia di Pachia Amos di e Yiorgos Petrakis dell'hotel taverna Sofia di Mochlos per il loro aiuto logistico.

Prisoners of "Maestrale" ...
It starts uphill! We are frozen in Mochlos, on the northeast coast of the island, because of sea impossible to navigate. Yesterday and today 6 and 7 sea state. The weather tells us nothing good even for the next 48 hours. The stretch expected and 'very exposed and does not offer shelter.
We decided to move the starting point to Ierapetra, on the South-East. The coast should offer more protected chances to navigate safely. We have already 'been able to appreciate the hospitality' of Crete islanders; thanks to Anastasia from Pachia Amos e Yiorgos Petrakis from the Hotel "Tavern Sofia" of Mochlos for their logistical support

Si parte!
Giacomo e Salvo raggiungeranno Creta stanotte e domattina di buon ora i kayaks saranno in acqua pronti per percorrere la prima tappa.

Le previsioni del tempo sono buone, anche se già martedì è previsto un leggero peggioramento.

Seguite il blog perchè da domani potrò darvi informazioni sul percorso, il punto gps e le condizioni meteo.

Starting!

Giacomo and Salvo will reach Crete tonight and tomorrow very early in the morning they will put kayaks into the water ready to take the first step. The weather is good, even if Tuesday is already expected a slight worsening. Follow the blog, because tomorrow I can give you information about the course, the point gps and weather conditions.

Finalmente Creta!

Completati gli ultimi preparativi, revisionata l'attrezzatura, verificato il carico, ora i kayak sono pronti per la partenza.

Venerdì sera Giacomo e Salvo si imbarcheranno per Napoli per poi procedere fino a Brindisi, Patrasso, Atene e finalmente ......Creta!

La partenza vera e propria è prevista per l'inizio della prossima settimana...

Finally Crete!

Having completed the final preparations, overhauled equipment, checked the cargo, now the kayaks are ready for departure. On Friday evening, Giacomo and Salvo will take the ferry to Naples and then to Brindisi, Patras, Athens and finally ...... Crete!

The real departure is scheduled for early next week ...

Navigazione in senso orario

Siamo ormai a pochi giorni dalla partenza per Creta.

Nella circumnavigazione di un'isola valutare il senso verso cui andare è di fondamentale importanza. Studiare venti, correnti, ridossi e altro che può ostacolare o facilitare la sicurezza e la realizzazione di un viaggio del genere.

Quella riportata sotto è una interessante mappa dei venti del Mar Egeo in cui si spiega il perchè di questa scelta (se vuoi ingrandirla clicca sopra)

I venti sono la principale preoccupazione poichè, soprattutto nel periodo estivo, raggiungono una forte intensità. Soprattutto il Meltemi, temutissimo dai naviganti e soprattutto dai velisti.

Il programma prevede di mettere i kayak in acqua nella parte Nord-Ovest dell'isola, quindi navigare verso Est, leggermente a favore rispetto ai venti dominanti, per poi essere ridossati quando navigheremo nel versante meridionale.

Tutto questo sempre sperando in una benedizione dai "piani alti", Poseidone compreso...

We are now a few days before leaving for Crete.

In a circumnavigation around an island to assess the direction where to go is crucial. Studying winds, currents, shelter and other things that can impede or facilitate the security and the realization of a trip of this kind.

This above is an interesting map of the winds in the Aegean Sea which explains why we made this choice (if you want to enlarge it click above).

The winds are the main concern because, especially in summer, reaching a high intensity. Above all, the Meltemi, feared by seamen and especially by sailors.

The plan is to put the kayaks in the water at the north-west of the island, then paddle eastward, slightly in favour compared with the prevailing winds, and then, when in the southern side, paddle protected by the coast against northern winds.

All this always hoping for a blessing from the "high floors", Poseidon included...
