Niger River by Kayak – The Peul encounter

Riordinando foto e filmati fatti durante il viaggio in Mali...
L'incontro con i Peul (o Fulani), uno dei principali gruppi etnici che vive in Mali. Sono pastori nomadi che si spostano in tutto il Sahel, la fascia geografica subito sotto il Sahara, sempre alla ricerca di buoni pascoli per le proprie mandrie. Poche volte l'anno sono costretti ad attraversare il Niger proprio per trovare territori più fertili ed erbosi per le mucche.
I Peul spingono gli animali, impauriti dall'acqua, da una riva all'altra, seguendoli per evitarne l'annegamento. Purtroppo una non ce l'ha fatta.
Atmosfera incredibile ed emozionante quando mi sono trovato davanti a questo vero e proprio spettacolo. Soprattutto se vissuto dal kayak...

While reorganizing photos and videos made during the trip to Mali...The meeting with the Peul (or Fulani), one of the main ethnic groups living in Mali. They are nomadic pastoralists who move all over the Sahel, just below the Sahara geographical range, always in search of good pasture for their herds. Few times a year are forced to cross the Niger to find their more fertile lands and grass for the cows.
The Fulani push the animals, afraid of the water, from shore to shore, following them to prevent drowning. Unfortunately one has done it.
Amazing atmosphere and exciting, when I was in front of this real spectacle. Especially if it is lived from the kayak ...

A Casa!

Finalmente a casa! Anche il viaggio per rientrare a Bamako ha riservato emozioni, arrivato a Mopti smonto il kayak con l'aiuto di Ibrahim, incontrato sulla pinassa, e poi con un bus locale vado a Bamako.

Il giorno successivo riesco a confermare l'anticipo del volo per l'Italia.

Ultimi saluti all'amico Jeanbakir che con la sua ospitalità ha contribuito a rendere questo viaggio unico.

Oltre a Valentina e la mia piccola Germana trovo a sorpresa anche Leo  all'aereoporto. Anche loro miei compagni d'avventura... senza il loro contributo questa avventura non sarebbe stata possibile.

At Home!

Finally at home! Even the journey back to Bamako has reserved emotions, arrived in Mopti disassemble the kayak with the help of Ibrahim, met on the pinassa, and then I go with a local bus to Bamako.

The next day, I can confirm the anticipation of the flight to Italy.

Last greetings to Jeanbakir, friend who with her hospitality has helped make this journey unique.

In addition to Valentina and my little Germana a surprise was to find Leo at the airport. They, too, my companions of adventure ... without their contribution this adventure would not have been possible.

"Un'altra emozionante giornata, l'ultima di questa stupenda avventura. Navigo pensando tutti gli incontri fatti in questi giorni. Tanti momenti difficili ma anche tanti sorrisi pieni di amicizia e sincerità. Arrivati al villaggio di Salif grande festa d'accoglienza. Ma subito dopo cena prendo una pinasse pubblica che arriva a Mopti domani. Non ho il tempo di smontare il kayak, lo farò a Mopti. Il nord del Mali è vietato agli stranieri e devo rientrare subito. Da qui in poi si entra nel distretto di Timbouctou, dopo quanto fatto dai terroristi non è proprio il caso di proseguire. Via fiume è più lento ma più sicuro. Alcuni militari al villaggio me lo confermano. Il viaggio in kayak termina qui. Adesso mi tocca il viaggio di ritorno, praticamente un'altra avventura... Ciao "

"Another exciting day, the last of this wonderful adventure. I paddle thinking to all the people I met during past days. Many difficult moments but also many smiles full of friendship sincerity. When I'm arrrived at  Salif village I reiceve a  great party host. But after dinner I take a public pinasse becouse I want  to arrive in Mopti tomorrow. Do not have time to disassemble the kayak, I'll do in Mopti. The north of Mali is prohibited to foreigners and I have to return immediately. From here you enter the district Timbouctou, after what has been done by terrorists, is not just the case to proceed. By river is slower but safer. Some soldiers in the village confirm it. The kayak trip ends here. Now I have to the return journey, almost another adventure ... Hello"

Gore- Niafunke 64 Km

"Sveglia con il Leonardo kayak ricoperto di sabbia portata dal vento. Il rinforzo della chiglia si sta rivelando fonadamentale  negli atterraggi. Spesso il kayak carico viene trascinato dagli amici maliani  che vogliono aiutarmi. Oggi centinaia di vacche attraversano il fiume spinte dagli allevatori Peul. Mi rendo utile con il kayak spingendone alcune con la prua verso la riva. I Peul ringraziano sorridenti. Faccio il campo fuori dal villaggio caotico perchè oggi sono davvero stanco, domani conto di arrivare al villaggio di Salif ed organizzare il rientro via fiume. Ciao."

"Wake up with Leonardo kayaks covered with wind-blown sand. The reinforcement of the keel is proving crucial in landing. Often the heavy kayak is dragged by Malians friends who want to help me. Today, hundreds of cattle drivenby the Peul people across the river. I Help them with some pushing  the kayak with its bow toward the shore. The Peul thank smiling. I stop outside the village because I am really tired today; tomorrow I hope to arrive at the village of Salif and organize the return by river. Hello. "

Lac Debo- Gore 58 Km

"Lasciamo il lago verso nord. Decine di piccoli canali si riuniscono nuovamente in un unico fiume. Dopo pochi km la vegetazione accanto al fiume diventa quasi desertica. Sembra di aver cambiato continente in poche ore. Decido di finire il viaggio a Saiga, il villaggio di Salif, che si trova poco prima della zona di Timbouctou. E poi di rientrare via fiume, dopo aver smontato il kayak, con una pinasse a motore per Mopti."

"I leave the lake to the north. Dozens of small channels come together again in a single river. After a few km along the river the vegetation around me is almost deserted. It seems to have changed the continent in a few hours. I decide to finish the trip to Saiga, the village of Salif, which is located just before the area Timbouctou. "Pagaiata più faticosa per l'assenza di corrente. L'ingresso al lago dopo km di piccoli canali in cui perdersi è facile. Vento contro con onde quasi "marine". Per la prima volta entra un pò d'acqua nel kayak. Seguo la costa a Nord, più ridossata. Ci fermiamo in un villaggio dove hanno appena subito l'attacco di un ippopotamo. Domani rimango incollato alla piroga di Salif! Campo in spiaggia  attaccato alla radio per le news".

"Today paddle is more difficult by the absence of current. The entrance to the lake after miles of small channels in which getting lost is easy. Against the wind with waves almost "marine." "Ieri sera apprendo di seri problemi di sicurezza in zona Timbouctou. Un turista morto, altri rapiti. Oggi governo maliano evacua tutti gli stranieri dal Nord con ponte aereo. Non potrò entrare in area Touareg. Oggi ho comunque navigato verso il lago. Il fiume si divide in vari canali. Seguo le indicazioni di Salif, che si rivela molto esperto. Campo a pochi km dal lago. Immersi nel verde con uccelli di ogni tipo in volo. Ciao"

Unfortunately, the situation in Mali is becoming a bit dangerous, especially in the zone of Timbuctou.  Giacomo is safe, but probably  he will skip the last stages of the travel planner to set up Timbuctou.

"Ieri incontro Salif con famiglia che torna al villaggio dopo il mercato. Mi seguirà durante la navigazione. D'ora in poi si entra nel Delta Interno del Niger con presenza di ippopotami e coccodrilli. Salif conosce molto bene la zona. La trattativa è stata la cosa più faticosa del viaggio. Ci siamo messi d'accordo solo a tarda sera. Oggi navigazione ok, Leonardo kayak non perde un colpo. A Kotaka campo davanti la moschea sul fiume. Ciao"

"Yesterday I met Salif with the family back to the village after the market. He will follow me during navigation. "Corrente sempre forte che mi consente di arrivare presto a Mopti, chiamata la venezia d'africa per il vecchio porto situato alla confluenza del fiume Bani. Emozionante l'ingresso nel porto proprio nel giorno del mercato. Decine di piroghe e pinasse, tipiche imbarcazioni del Niger, che caricano e scaricano ogni sorta di mercanzia. Il rumore dei martelli dei cantieri delle piroghe completa l'incredibile atmosfera. Ciao"

"Notte disturbata dalla presenza di topi. Di buon ora sul kayak. La vegetazione comincia ad essere semidesertica, tipica del Sahel. Peul con mandrie lungo il fiume tutto il giorno. Mi fermo a Maradje per visitare la moschea costruita in fango e legno che ricorda quella più famosa di Djennè. Monto la tenda nel giardino del capo villaggio. Anche se sembra lo scemo del villaggio... Solita grande ospitalità. Ciao"

"Unfortunatly last night I did'n t  sleep well becouse the presence of mice. I am on the kayak very early in the morning. The vegetation begins to be semi-desert, typical of the Sahel. Peul people are alla day with theyr herds along the river. In Maradje I make a stop to visit the mosque built of mud and wood reminiscent of the most famous of Djenne. I Pitch my tent in the garden of the village chief. Although it seems the village idiot ... Usual great hospitality. Hello"

Senankou- Diafarabe, 76 km
"Stamani un pò di ritardo alla partenza. Ieri sera sono rimasto a parlare con i pescatori Bozo fino a tarda sera. La loro accoglienza è commovente.Comincio ad attraversare la regione di Diafarabe, abitata dall'etnia Peul, allevatori nomadi. In questo periodo si riuniscono lungo il lato Ovest del Niger ed attendono l'acqua bassa per attraversare il fiume con le mandrie. Uno spettacolo unico..peccato che sarà a Dicembre! In tarda mattinata il vento forte rende un pò difficile la navigazione.  Ciao!"

"This morning I start paddling a little later. Last night I was talking to Bozo fishermen until late in the evening. Their hospitality is touching. I start to cross the Diafarabe region, inhabited by ethnic Peul, nomadic farmermen. In this period  they stay along the west side of the Niger waiting to cross the river with their cattle in the shallow water. A unique show .. unfortunatly it will be in December! Later this morning a strong wind makes it a little difficult to paddle. Hello! "

"Un salto veloce all'importante mercato del lunedì, dove si incontrano tutti i Bambara, etnia locale. Frutta, vedura, pane e via verso la diga di Markala. Le piroghe e, quindi, anche il Leo kayak, passano per un canale di circa 7 km che affianca il Niger nel tratto della diga. Alla fine del canale c'è una chiusa per scendere a valle Alcuni pescatori approfittano delle cascate per le loro reti. Campo in un villaggio Bozo. Ciao!"

Segou- Senankou, 75 km" A fast visit to the important market on Monday where I meet  Bambara people, the local ethnic group. Fruits, vegetables, bread and so  to the Markal Dam. The local canoes and, therefore, also Leo kayak, pass through a channel that runs along the Niger river for 7 km. At the end of the channel there is a lock to go down. Some fishermen take advantage of the falls for their fishing nets. Night stop in a village Bozo. Hello! "

"Partenza emozionante. Finalmente in acqua dopo tanti preparativi. E' tutto diverso rispetto al viaggiare in kayak per mare. La corrente a favore si fa sentire piacevolmente. Lasciata la caotica capitale alle spalle il fiume comincia dare spettacolo. Piroghe cariche di merci di ogni sorta, pescatori che gettano le reti...Mangio un boccone proprio con loro e proseguo fino a Koulikoro, porto commerciale dove trovo una camera o meglio un bed senza breakfast. Il Leonardo kayak ha cominciato proprio bene il suo lavoro."

"Exciting departure. Finally after so many preparations I'm in the water. It 's all different than traveling by sea kayak.  I feel nicely the current benefit. Leaving the chaotic capital behind the river begins his show. Canoes laden with goods of all kinds, fishermen cast their nets ... I have lunch with them and then I go right up to Koulikoro, commercial port where I find a room or rather a bed without breakfast. "Domani si parte. L'accoglienza a Bamako da parte di Jeanbakir è stata eccezionale. Il lLonardo Kayak è pronto. Il Montaggio è stato più facile del previsto. Ho ridotto il carico al minimo puntando sulle fermate in città importanti come Segou e Mopti per il cibo. Sopralluogo ul punto del fiume da cui partirò, alla periferia nord ovest della città. Un pò di tensione ..da trasformare in energia non appena sarò in acqua"

"I will leave tomorrow morning. Jeanbakir and his family are really friendly. Leonardo's kayak now is ready to go. It was easier than I expeted to assembly it. I loaded only few things, counting on stop in town like Segou or Mopti to take more food. I'll take a look to the river side from where I'll leave tomorrow, Nordwest of Bamako. I feel a little tension ..to be converted in energy as soon as I'll be into the water"

Si parte!

Tutto pronto per la partenza. Domani all'alba in volo per Bamako in Mali.
Dopo mesi tra allenamenti, prove di carico, visti, vaccini, farmacia da viaggio, carte geografiche, videocamere, kit di riparazione e non so quante altre storie, credo, o meglio spero, di essere pronto.
Non rimane che il rimontaggio del folding kayak (costruito da Leonardo De Chiara) a Bamako ed il completamento della cambusa acquistando in loco del cibo.
Durante il viaggio Valentina aggiornerà il Blog postando gli SMS che invierò a fine giornata.
Non vedo l'ora di pagaiare visitando i villaggi di pescatori Bozo e attraversare il Parco Naturale del Delta Interno del Niger...

Here we go!
Everything is ready for departure. Tomorrow morning flight to Bamako in Mali.
After months of training, load tests, visas, vaccines, pharmacy, travel maps, cameras, repair kit and I do not know how many other stories, or rather I hope to be ready.
All that remains is the reassembly of the Folding kayak (built by Leonardo De Chiara) in Bamako and the completion of locally food galley buying.
During the trip Valentina will update the blog posting the SMS send at the end of the day.
I can not wait to paddle visiting Bozo fishing villages and cross the Natural Park of the Niger Inner Delta ...

A perfect paddling day
In allenamento per il viaggio in Mali
Prima di ogni viaggio è importante prevedere allenamenti di resistenza per preparare il viaggio. Complice un meteo favorevole e approfittando di alcuni amici a Scopello decido di andare partendo da Mondello e tentare di pagaiare tutti i 60 km di costa del tragitto. Partenza di buon ora con Salvo che mi segue per il primo tratto. Pausa nella spiaggia di Cinisi-Magaggiari dove incontro altri amici kayaker, Saverio ed Eugenio. Quindi di nuovo in acqua per affrontare il Golfo di Castellammare. Nel pomeriggio, dopo 9 ore circa dalla partenza (di cui circa 8 di pagaiata) arrivo a Scopello dove incontro Enrico e Achille, anche loro in in kayak. Tutto OK. I prossimi allenamenti saranno con il folding che utilizzerò per il viaggio.

A Perfect paddling day
In training for the trip to Mali

Before each trip is important to provide resistance training to prepare the trip. Accomplice to a favorable weather, and taking advantage of some friends in Scopello, I decide to paddle to Scopello starting from Mondello and attempt to paddle the entire 60 km coastline of the journey. Departure early in the morning with Salvo that followed me for the first leg. Break at the beach in Cinisi Magaggiari where I meet other kayakers, Saverio and Eugenio. So back into the water to cross the Gulf of Castellammare. In the afternoon, after 9 hours from the start (of which about 8 of paddling) arrival in Scopello where I meet Enrico and Achille, even in their kayaks. Everything OK. The next training will be with the folding I will be use for the trip.
