Diafarabe- Maradje 68 km.

"Notte disturbata dalla presenza di topi. Di buon ora sul kayak. La vegetazione comincia ad essere semidesertica, tipica del Sahel. Peul con mandrie lungo il fiume tutto il giorno. Mi fermo a Maradje per visitare la moschea costruita in fango e legno che ricorda quella più famosa di Djennè. Monto la tenda nel giardino del capo villaggio. Anche se sembra lo scemo del villaggio... Solita grande ospitalità. Ciao"

"Unfortunatly last night I did'n t  sleep well becouse the presence of mice. I am on the kayak very early in the morning. The vegetation begins to be semi-desert, typical of the Sahel. Peul people are alla day with theyr herds along the river. In Maradje I make a stop to visit the mosque built of mud and wood reminiscent of the most famous of Djenne. I Pitch my tent in the garden of the village chief. Although it seems the village idiot ... Usual great hospitality. Hello"

Senankou- Diafarabe, 76 km
"Stamani un pò di ritardo alla partenza. Ieri sera sono rimasto a parlare con i pescatori Bozo fino a tarda sera. La loro accoglienza è commovente.Comincio ad attraversare la regione di Diafarabe, abitata dall'etnia Peul, allevatori nomadi. In questo periodo si riuniscono lungo il lato Ovest del Niger ed attendono l'acqua bassa per attraversare il fiume con le mandrie. Uno spettacolo unico..peccato che sarà a Dicembre! In tarda mattinata il vento forte rende un pò difficile la navigazione.  Ciao!"

Senankou- Diafarabe, 76 km

"This morning I start paddling a little later. Last night I was talking to Bozo fishermen until late in the evening. Their hospitality is touching. I start to cross the Diafarabe region, inhabited by ethnic Peul, nomadic farmermen. In this period  they stay along the west side of the Niger waiting to cross the river with their cattle in the shallow water. A unique show .. unfortunatly it will be in December! Later this morning a strong wind makes it a little difficult to paddle. Hello! "

 Segou- Senakou, 75 km
"Un salto veloce all'importante mercato del lunedì, dove si incontrano tutti i Bambara, etnia locale. Frutta, vedura, pane e via verso la diga di Markala. Le piroghe e, quindi, anche il Leo kayak, passano per un canale di circa 7 km che affianca il Niger nel tratto della diga. Alla fine del canale c'è una chiusa per scendere a valle Alcuni pescatori approfittano delle cascate per le loro reti. Campo in un villaggio Bozo. Ciao!"

4° Day 21/11/2011
Segou- Senankou, 75 km" A fast visit to the important market on Monday where I meet  Bambara people, the local ethnic group. Fruits, vegetables, bread and so  to the Markal Dam. The local canoes and, therefore, also Leo kayak, pass through a channel that runs along the Niger river for 7 km. At the end of the channel there is a lock to go down. Some fishermen take advantage of the falls for their fishing nets. Night stop in a village Bozo. Hello! "

"Partenza con saluto generale del villaggio. Il Kayak naviga quasi a 6 nodi senza forzare. Un vento termico verso il Sahara a nord si somma alla corrente, speriamo che duri. Arrivo a Segou al tramonto e cerco notizie su come passare la diga Markala che mi attende domani. Ciao!"

" Morning start with a general greeting of the village. The Kayak sail almost 6 knots without using force. "Partenza all'alba per evitare il caldo di mezzogiorno. Navigo anche nel tardo pomeriggio fino a poco prima del tramonto. I bambini dei villagi Bambara rimangono incantati a vedere il kayak. Sono ospite del capo villaggio il quale mi vuole a casa sua, anzi a capanna sua. Preferisco montare la tenda accanto. Adesso mi attende la cena con loro. Stanco ma ok. Ciao!"

"Departure dawn to avoid the midday heat. I paddle even in the late afternoon until just before sunset. The children in Bambara villages are enchanted to see the kayak. I am a guest of the village chief who wants me to his house, or better to his "hut". I prefer to pitch my tent just next his  door. Now I wait for dinner with them. Tired but ok. Hello!"

Bamako- Koulikoro, 57 km

"Partenza emozionante. Finalmente in acqua dopo tanti preparativi. E' tutto diverso rispetto al viaggiare in kayak per mare. La corrente a favore si fa sentire piacevolmente. Lasciata la caotica capitale alle spalle il fiume comincia dare spettacolo. Piroghe cariche di merci di ogni sorta, pescatori che gettano le reti...Mangio un boccone proprio con loro e proseguo fino a Koulikoro, porto commerciale dove trovo una camera o meglio un bed senza breakfast. Il Leonardo kayak ha cominciato proprio bene il suo lavoro."

"Exciting departure. Finally after so many preparations I'm in the water. It 's all different than traveling by sea kayak.  I feel nicely the current benefit. Leaving the chaotic capital behind the river begins his show. Canoes laden with goods of all kinds, fishermen cast their nets ... I have lunch with them and then I go right up to Koulikoro, commercial port where I find a room or rather a bed without breakfast. The Leonardo kayak has just started his job well

"Domani si parte. L'accoglienza a Bamako da parte di Jeanbakir è stata eccezionale. Il lLonardo Kayak è pronto. Il Montaggio è stato più facile del previsto. Ho ridotto il carico al minimo puntando sulle fermate in città importanti come Segou e Mopti per il cibo. Sopralluogo ul punto del fiume da cui partirò, alla periferia nord ovest della città. Un pò di tensione ..da trasformare in energia non appena sarò in acqua"

"I will leave tomorrow morning. Jeanbakir and his family are really friendly. Leonardo's kayak now is ready to go. It was easier than I expeted to assembly it. I loaded only few things, counting on stop in town like Segou or Mopti to take more food. I'll take a look to the river side from where I'll leave tomorrow, Nordwest of Bamako. I feel a little tension ..to be converted in energy as soon as I'll be into the water"

Si parte!

Tutto pronto per la partenza. Domani all'alba in volo per Bamako in Mali.
Dopo mesi tra allenamenti, prove di carico, visti, vaccini, farmacia da viaggio, carte geografiche, videocamere, kit di riparazione e non so quante altre storie, credo, o meglio spero, di essere pronto.
Non rimane che il rimontaggio del folding kayak (costruito da Leonardo De Chiara) a Bamako ed il completamento della cambusa acquistando in loco del cibo.
Durante il viaggio Valentina aggiornerà il Blog postando gli SMS che invierò a fine giornata.
Non vedo l'ora di pagaiare visitando i villaggi di pescatori Bozo e attraversare il Parco Naturale del Delta Interno del Niger...

Here we go!
Everything is ready for departure. Tomorrow morning flight to Bamako in Mali.
After months of training, load tests, visas, vaccines, pharmacy, travel maps, cameras, repair kit and I do not know how many other stories, or rather I hope to be ready.
All that remains is the reassembly of the Folding kayak (built by Leonardo De Chiara) in Bamako and the completion of locally food galley buying.
During the trip Valentina will update the blog posting the SMS send at the end of the day.
I can not wait to paddle visiting Bozo fishing villages and cross the Natural Park of the Niger Inner Delta ...

A perfect paddling day
In allenamento per il viaggio in Mali
Prima di ogni viaggio è importante prevedere allenamenti di resistenza per preparare il viaggio. Complice un meteo favorevole e approfittando di alcuni amici a Scopello decido di andare partendo da Mondello e tentare di pagaiare tutti i 60 km di costa del tragitto. Partenza di buon ora con Salvo che mi segue per il primo tratto. Pausa nella spiaggia di Cinisi-Magaggiari dove incontro altri amici kayaker, Saverio ed Eugenio. Quindi di nuovo in acqua per affrontare il Golfo di Castellammare. Nel pomeriggio, dopo 9 ore circa dalla partenza (di cui circa 8 di pagaiata) arrivo a Scopello dove incontro Enrico e Achille, anche loro in in kayak. Tutto OK. I prossimi allenamenti saranno con il folding che utilizzerò per il viaggio.

A Perfect paddling day
In training for the trip to Mali

Before each trip is important to provide resistance training to prepare the trip. Accomplice to a favorable weather, and taking advantage of some friends in Scopello, I decide to paddle to Scopello starting from Mondello and attempt to paddle the entire 60 km coastline of the journey. Departure early in the morning with Salvo that followed me for the first leg. Break at the beach in Cinisi Magaggiari where I meet other kayakers, Saverio and Eugenio. So back into the water to cross the Gulf of Castellammare. In the afternoon, after 9 hours from the start (of which about 8 of paddling) arrival in Scopello where I meet Enrico and Achille, even in their kayaks. Everything OK. The next training will be with the folding I will be use for the trip.

Preparativi per andare!

La partenza è prevista da Bamako nel mese di Novembre 2011. Oltre 1000 km di navigazione sul fiume Niger, in Mali, toccando villaggi di pescatori e attraversando il Parco Naturale del Delta Interno, fino a Timbouctu.
Verrà usato un kayak smontabile costruito da Leonardo De Chiara. Un FAP 15 in tubi di alluminio e rivestimento in PVC rinforzato.

Questa scelta conferisce al viaggio valore doppio poichè non si hanno notizie di altri canoisti in un viaggio simile, in autosufficenza ma soprattutto con un kayak autocostruito! Un ringraziamento particolare a Leo che in questi giorni sta apportando modifiche al kayak per aumentarne la capacità di carico e l'affidabilità. Nei prossimi giorni posterò le immagini dei test e delle modifiche fatte.

Preparations to go!

Departure will be from Bamako in November 2011. Over 1000 km of navigation on the River Niger in Mali, passing through fishing villages, the Natural Park of the Inner Delta and then until Timbouctu.
Will be used a folding kayak built by Leonardo De Chiara. A FAP 15 in aluminum tubes and reinforced PVC covering.

This choice gives the trip a double value because there is no news of other kayakers ventured into a similar journey in self-sufficiency and without support, but especially with a homemade kayak!
A special thanks to Leo, who in these days is making changes to the kayak in order to increase the load capacity and reliability. In the next days I will post pictures of tests and changes.
