A perfect paddling day
In allenamento per il viaggio in Mali
Prima di ogni viaggio è importante prevedere allenamenti di resistenza per preparare il viaggio. Complice un meteo favorevole e approfittando di alcuni amici a Scopello decido di andare partendo da Mondello e tentare di pagaiare tutti i 60 km di costa del tragitto. Partenza di buon ora con Salvo che mi segue per il primo tratto. Pausa nella spiaggia di Cinisi-Magaggiari dove incontro altri amici kayaker, Saverio ed Eugenio. Quindi di nuovo in acqua per affrontare il Golfo di Castellammare. Nel pomeriggio, dopo 9 ore circa dalla partenza (di cui circa 8 di pagaiata) arrivo a Scopello dove incontro Enrico e Achille, anche loro in in kayak. Tutto OK. I prossimi allenamenti saranno con il folding che utilizzerò per il viaggio.

In training for the trip to Mali

Before each trip is important to provide resistance training to prepare the trip. Accomplice to a favorable weather, and taking advantage of some friends in Scopello, I decide to paddle to Scopello starting from Mondello and attempt to paddle the entire 60 km coastline of the journey. Departure early in the morning with Salvo that followed me for the first leg. Break at the beach in Cinisi Magaggiari where I meet other kayakers, Saverio and Eugenio. So back into the water to cross the Gulf of Castellammare. In the afternoon, after 9 hours from the start (of which about 8 of paddling) arrival in Scopello where I meet Enrico and Achille, even in their kayaks. Everything OK. The next training will be with the folding I will be use for the trip.

NIGER RIVER by KAYAK
Preparativi per andare!

La partenza è prevista da Bamako nel mese di Novembre 2011. Oltre 1000 km di navigazione sul fiume Niger, in Mali, toccando villaggi di pescatori e attraversando il Parco Naturale del Delta Interno, fino a Timbouctu.
Verrà usato un kayak smontabile costruito da Leonardo De Chiara. Un FAP 15 in tubi di alluminio e rivestimento in PVC rinforzato.

Questa scelta conferisce al viaggio valore doppio poichè non si hanno notizie di altri canoisti in un viaggio simile, in autosufficenza ma soprattutto con un kayak autocostruito! Un ringraziamento particolare a Leo che in questi giorni sta apportando modifiche al kayak per aumentarne la capacità di carico e l'affidabilità. Nei prossimi giorni posterò le immagini dei test e delle modifiche fatte.

NIGER RIVER by KAYAK
Preparations to go!

Departure will be from Bamako in November 2011. Over 1000 km of navigation on the River Niger in Mali, passing through fishing villages, the Natural Park of the Inner Delta and then until Timbouctu.
Will be used a folding kayak built by Leonardo De Chiara. A FAP 15 in aluminum tubes and reinforced PVC covering.

This choice gives the trip a double value because there is no news of other kayakers ventured into a similar journey in self-sufficiency and without support, but especially with a homemade kayak!
A special thanks to Leo, who in these days is making changes to the kayak in order to increase the load capacity and reliability. In the next days I will post pictures of tests and changes.

Prunete - Bastia, 40 km
ARRIVATI!

"Mare mosso e ventoso. La Corsica decide di regalarci l'ultimo giorno di mare un pò impegnativo. Di mattina il vento da Nord Est ci rallenta, nel pomeriggio la rotazione del vento ci regale un insperato Sud Est che ci spinge verso Bastia.

Nel pomeriggio i kayaks toccano terra nello stesso identico punto dove l'avevano lasciata 16 giorni fa. 16 giorni di viaggio, di cui 13 di navigazione, con una media giornaliera di circa 45 km. Viaggio in totale autosufficenza con la pesca a traina assoluta protagonista delle nostre cene.

Mentre brindiamo la nostra mente vola già verso nuove destinazioni da navigare. Ciao a tutti e alla prossima"

Prunete - Bastia, 40km
ARRIVED!

"Rough seas and windy. Corsica decides to give us the last day of the sea a little challenging. In the morning the wind from the North East slows us down our navigation the rotation of the wind in the afternoon gave us an unexpected Southeast that push us towards Bastia.
In the afternoon kayaks touch the ground at the same spot where they had left 16 days ago. 16 days of travel, of which 13 are paddling days, with a daily average of about 45 km. Travel in total self-sufficiency with the trolling absolute protagonist of our dinners.
While we drink our minds already flies to new destinations to navigate. Hello everyone and see you to the next adventure."

Etang d'Urbino - Prunete, 40 km
"Mare calmo. Buona navigazione. I kayak, più scarichi dei primi giorni, scivolano benissimo nell'acqua. Ad Aleria visitiamo il fiume e la laguna Diana inoltrandoci all'interno per oltre 6 km. Uscendo dal fiume il vento, da Nord, rallenta un pò la nostra andatura. Pesca sempre oltre ogni più rosea immaginazione.
Ci fermiamo nella spiaggia di Prunete per la notte. Bastia dista ormai poche miglia..."

Etang d'Urbino - Prunete, 40 km
"Calm sea. Good navigation. The kayaks, more discharged of the first day, slip into the water very well. At Aleria we visit the river and the lagoon Diana forwarding to more than 6 km. Leaving the river, the wind (from the North) slows down a bit our navigation. Fishing always beyond our imagination.
We stop in Prunete beach for the night. Bastia is now a few miles far...."

"Mare calmo. Navigazione tranquilla. Costa da verdeggiante a rocciosa con calette. Poi lunghissimo arenile. Al tramonto visitiamo l'interno dell'Etang d'Urbino, laguna litoranea famosa per la pesca di cozze e ostriche. Colori e atmosfera unica."

"Calm sea, wind 3 / 5 knots from the northeast. Smooth paddling. The east side is confirmed not windswept. Pleasant lunch in Punta Chiappa where we eat with the company of a friendly group of kayakers naturists."

"Mare calmo ma vento di 12/20 nodi da Sud-Est cioè contro. Navighiamo bene ma rallentati, tanto che facciamo solo 20 miglia scarse. Bocche di Bonifacio spettacolari, tante foto bellissime. Pesca prodigiosa con 20 pesci misti. Entriamo nel Mar Tirreno e puntiamo verso l'Isola Cavallo dove ci fermiamo per la notte. Da domani le prue dirette a Nord."

"Sea calm but wind 12/20 knots from the south-east that is against us. We paddled well but slowed down, so that we only do 20 miles poor. Strait of Bonifacio spectacular, so many beautiful pictures. Fishing prodigious, 20 fish mixed. We enter the Tyrrhenian Sea and aim towards the Cavallo Island where we stop for the night. From tomorrow the prows aimed at North."

"Ancora stop forzato, nel Golfo di Propriano, per il mare molto mosso del dì precedente. Alle 3 riprendiamo il mare, ancora mosso e ventoso, pagaiando e pescando. Ci fermiamo in una spiaggia idilliaca per fare campo. Alle 22 ci cacciano perchè la spiaggia è privata! Pagaiando sotto le stelle arriviamo alla spiaggia di Roccapina, altro posto d'incanto."

"Still forced stop in the Gulf of Propriano, for the roughest of the previous day. At 3 pm we take back the sea still rough and windy, paddling and fishing. We stop at an idyllic beach to make camp. At 22 some people hunt us because the beach is private! Paddling under the stars we arrive at the Roccapina's beach, another enchanting place!"

"La notte non prometteva nulla di buono... Al risveglio ci rendiamo subito conto che le onde alte 2,5 metri non ci avrebbero permesso di avanzare. Ne approfittiamo per visitare Filitosa, Sito preistorico a 7 km di distanza. Giusto per agranchirci le gambe."

"Morning with calm seas. At one a Mistral 15/20 knots strong arrives just to push us in Porto Pollo where we remain stopped for the wind that reaches 25 knots in the afternoon (always from the NW). I write from the tent that seems to fly away at any moment by the strong wind!"
